Final Visit

"Looks like it might rain," Heidi said as she stared up at the greying sky. So dense, the rolling clouds looked like they were ready to bombard the ground with rocks.

Tony stopped and looked at her. "What's up?"

"Huh?"

"'Looks like it might rain'. That isn't you. What's going on?"

"What do you know what is and isn't me? We've only known each other for a few days."

Although Tony looked at her, he let the silence hang. The echo of her defensive reply rolled through her mind.

A glance at the large house that she had her food stashed in, and Heidi sighed. "Well, it's hardly been a good day."

Tony nodded. "You're right. But there are plenty of places where we can stay. And maybe you're better off away from those clowns at the farmhouse."

"What about Ash?"

"We'll go back for him."

After she'd looked up again at the derelict house, Heidi sighed. "This house doesn't help either. I fucking hate this place." As they walked up to its smashed-in front door, the huge building loomed over them. It seemed to goad her for her weakness. But she couldn't let it win. This world had too many things to fear; ghosts and memories didn't need to be on that list. In fact, if the world were filled with ghosts and memories, it would be a darn sight safer than the insanity that had gripped London since the crash.

At the bottom of the stairs that led to the front door, Heidi leaned down and lifted the front of Zach's pram from the ground. Tony kept a hold of the handles, and they carried it into the house. There didn't seem any point in telling Tony about what she'd witnessed. The sadness in her heart wouldn't diminish if she shared it.

For the first time in her past few visits, Heidi walked slowly into the house and listened. Although she'd run in before, she physically couldn't with the pram this time, and the men had proven it wouldn't always be empty. Nausea back-flipped through her stomach; it could have just been the memory, but the metallic reek of blood and ammonia stench of piss seemed to hang heavy in the air. Palpable, Heidi reached up and wiped her face, half expecting to have red on her hand when she pulled it away.

When Tony screwed his nose up, Heidi shivered. The smell was real. She pointed up the stairs. "We need to go up there."

With his mouth slightly opened, Tony looked up the derelict stairs. "It doesn't seem too bad. Maybe we could even stay here."

"Fuck, no," Heidi said. With Zach's pram still in her grip, she led the way up the stairs before Tony could debate it.

The sound of their steps echoed through the empty house. This would be the last time she came to this godforsaken place. Get the stash of supplies and get the fuck out. It had served its purpose. Besides, they needed to find somewhere they could take Ash to. Poor kid, he couldn't be left with that band of inbreds for too long.
